Amy grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania, and has been surrounded and supported by a multi-generational family of Western medicine physicians throughout her life. Amy has always had a natural inclination towards medicine, science and educating and helping others. Amy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Biology from UC Santa Barbara and a Masters in Education from Argosy University. She is a former collegiate swimmer, and spent most of her college and post-college years traveling and exploring her passions of science, education, curriculum and program development. Amy spent several years teaching environmental education and marine conservation both locally and abroad. Most recently, Amy served as co-director of parent, teacher and student services for The Lean on Me project, a local non-profit affiliated with NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness). She has a background in trauma-informed healing, development of social and emotional wellness curriculums, and mental health & wellness programs. Amy is also author of The Adventures of Splash & Shelly, a children's book series focused on social & emotional health, well-being and empowerment for whole family-centered wellness.
Because of her own sensitivities to Western pharmaceuticals and medical practices, Amy became increasingly fascinated with alternative modalities of healing when she was faced with her own personal health challenges. Traditional Chinese Medicine and nutrition/lifestyle modifications became an integral part of her healing process. This ultimately led her to shift careers and follow her passion to help others heal as well.
The philosophy behind Chinese and Functional Medicine involves discovering and treating the "root", or cause of a person's dis-ease, rather than just easing symptoms. Amy takes into consideration an individual's diet, lifestyle, stress level, exposure to trauma and stress, and thorough medical history to diagnose and treat the patient accordingly. The goal during treatment is not just to address the acute issue, but to help improve a patient's overall quality of life. Amy believes in using a strong integrative approach of Eastern and Western medicine when necessary. She is a firm believer in the "it takes a village" mentality -not just in raising children, but in healing our bodies as well!
